How to build a unique wall shelf

Oh how to make more space at home? With a wall-mounted shelf, of course! What if you crafted a one-of-a-kind piece yourself? A unique eye-catcher, the perfect finishing touch for your interior, and an ideal way to store your things stylishly.

Sure, there are plenty of options to make the walls in your home more functional. Home stores offer all kinds of solutions, in various styles, some even partially DIY. But you’d rather start from scratch because it’s that much more satisfying. Plus, it lets you add your personal touch.

Wall inspiration galore

The wall is often underrated as a place for storage, yet it has so much potential. With the right setup, various items can be transformed from clutter into beautiful decor. By moving things to the wall, you also free up space in other crowded areas, like your buffet cabinet. Or you could make a small kitchen or bathroom more practical.

There are plenty of creative ways to store items on the wall. Why not hang a birch branch with hooks where mugs can dangle decoratively? Or add a wall rack above your counter and sink to store kitchen utensils? If you’re into an industrial vibe, consider a concrete mesh panel as a wall rack in the living room to display your favourite photos.

Or a swing as a wall shelf

Sometimes, inspiration strikes out of the blue. Watching the kids swing outside, we had a brilliant idea: why not build a wall shelf inspired by a swing? That’s the plan for our step-by-step guide. But first, let’s talk tools.

Start with our trusty mitre saw. Perfect for making stable, precise cuts for the boards that make up our wall shelf. A telescopic mitre saw is even better, allowing you to cut wider pieces by pulling the blade toward you.

Next, you’ll need to drill holes, both through the boards for our shelf and the wall where we’ll hang it. A hammer drill works well for this, and you can find them with or without cords. A cordless hammer drill drill gives you full mobility, but make sure it has sufficient power: look for at least 18 V and a torque between 25 Nm and 50 Nm. Dual Power and Powerplus offer excellent options.

Finally, you’ll want to sand the boards. While an electric sander works, cords can get in the way. A cordless palm sander is ideal. Our Dual Power line offers one that’s easy to handle with one hand and collects dust in a container, keeping your space clean. Conveniently, it even includes the necessary sandpaper!
