How to choose the ideal mower for your lawn

You're in the market for a new lawnmower, but you want to make sure you're choosing the right one. There are so many options, from classic push mowers to smart robot models, but which one is the best fit for your garden? What are the key differences? And how can you avoid ending up with the wrong machine? With our tips, you’ll find the mower that’s just right for you and your lawn.

Take a moment to consider all your options before choosing a lawnmower. Not every machine is suitable for every type of garden. To make the right choice, it's best to keep these two things in mind: the size of your garden and its complexity (think slopes, curves, or lots of obstacles).

What are your options?

Lawnmowers come in all shapes and sizes. When choosing one, take note of the size of your garden, as this will help determine which type and cutting width is most suitable. The wider the cutting width, the faster you'll be able to cover large areas.

There are also different drive options available. For gardens of 500 m² or more, a petrol lawnmower remains a classic choice. No fussing with cables, plenty of power, a wide cutting width, and lots of freedom of movement. Just keep in mind that they tend to be louder and usually cost more than other types.

Then, there are the corded electric lawnmowers. They start easily, make less noise, are budget-friendly, and require little maintenance. Perfect for those who want something simple and quiet. However, you’ll need to factor in the cord, which limits your freedom of movement. As a result, they’re best suited for smaller gardens without too many trees or other obstacles.

It's no surprise that battery-powered mowers are becoming increasingly popular. They combine the convenience of an electric mower with the mobility of a petrol model. No cords, no emissions, and minimal maintenance.

Thanks to the rapid evolution of battery technology, they’re also becoming more powerful. Today, there are models that can easily mow up to 500 m². Plus, the batteries charge faster and hold their capacity better than ever before.

Finally, when choosing a lawnmower, it’s important to consider the cutting height. An adjustable cutting height allows you to keep your grass as short (or tall) as you prefer.

Cutting width and manoeuvrability are also key factors, especially if you have a larger or uneven garden with lots of obstacles.

The mower's capacity plays a significant role as well. The more powerful the machine, the easier it cuts through tall or dense grass, and the faster you can tackle a larger lawn.

And what happens to the grass after it's cut? Some mowers have a rear or side discharge. If you'd rather spend less time cleaning up, opt for a mower with a grass collection bag. If the mower has a mulching function, you can even use the shredded grass clippings as nourishment for your lawn.
