If the shoe cabinet fits... Here's how to build one yourself!

It's true, you could easily just buy a nice shoe cabinet at the store. But what if you can't find one that fits your and your family's needs? Don't worry, it's Powerplus to the rescue! Follow this step-by-step guide to build your own personalised shoe cabinet. No more shoes cluttering up your space!

Well-prepared is half the battle

Everything starts with a clear plan for your shoe cabinet. This will help you quickly figure out the dimensions you need to consider and how many shelves you’ll need to buy. So, what sizes are we talking about? Well, a practical shoe cabinet typically has a maximum length of 80 centimeters.

When it comes to height, think about your specific needs (and those of your housemates!). Will you be using it for low sneakers, or do you need space for boots? If it’s the latter, make sure to account for the distance between the shelves.

For the depth, it’s a good idea to leave some extra space. For example, you’ll need at least 30 centimeters of depth for size 40 shoes, or they won’t fit!

On to the sawing!

We're breaking down the work into two phases: cutting and assembling the boards, then mounting them.

Pro tip: use solid wood for the boards. That way, the cabinet won't need any finishing touches.

1) Cutting and securing the boards

  • Cut the required panels for the frame, along with the shelves, following the dimensions from your plan.
  • Secure the cut shelves with spring clamps.
  • Apply a layer of glue to the exact spots where you’ll attach the shelves.
  • Pre-drill the panels before you start screwing them together. Add extra dowels for additional stability.
  • Don’t forget to check that the panels are perpendicular.

2) Mounting the shelves

  • Mark the drilling spots for the shelves on the side panels. Be precise, as every centimeter counts here.
  • Drill the holes carefully—make sure you don’t accidentally drill through your brand-new cabinet! Use a drill that’s suitable for light work.
  • Press the shelf brackets into the drilled holes.

Thinking outside the box?

If you want to get really creative, you can always use a variety of materials to build a shoe cabinet. Did you know you can make a unique shoe rack out of PVC pipes? Or give that old ladder a second life by hanging your shoes from it!

If you’re looking to save space, you can also use a wall shelf to store your shoes. Neat and efficient!
